Golf on the up in East Africa

Windsor Golf Course - Kenya

There are some spectacular golf courses in East Africa

East Africa is busy positioning itself as a premier golf tourism destination with countries starting to collaborate and leveraging resources to attract another type of traveller.

The allure of East Africa has always had this part of the African continent high on the travel destination bucket list of safarigoers. From the Maasai Mara in Kenya and the Serengeti in Tanzania to the tree-climbing lions of Uganda and the gorillas of Rwanda, the region has its fair share of hot spots.

And now playing on some of the most spectacular courses in unbelievable landscapes can be added to the mix. Not only are governments, tourism boards and regional federations in East Africa starting to work together but there’s also been an increase in the development of golfing facilities across the region.

Earlier this year the Kenya Commercial Bank committed more than $500 000  towards the second edition of the KCB East Africa Golf Tour. The 11-month-long series will be held in Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania, Uganda and Burundi. Even though this is not a tourism event, it is hoped that the publicity generated will drum up even more enthusiasm.

Just recently, www.tourismupdate.co.za reported that ENVI Lodges announced the opening of a new tented camp, ENVI Kili, on the outskirts of Arusha in Tanzania, which will be available for booking in 2025. The camp will feature views of Mount Kilimanjaro and will offer golf activities.
