Wine Tasting - The Perfect Match

< >
It's hard to imagine that within a 15-minute drive of leaving the bustling Waterfront area, you could stumble upon a leafy valley of rolling hills and vineyards, meandering through historic wine estates and ancient brooks that seem untouched since the Cape's first settlers.

Welcome to the Cape Winelands, South Africa's main wine-producing region, spread across the picturesque hamlets of Stellenbosch, Paarl and Franschhoek. Stellenbosch is the country's wine capital and second oldest town, apart from being an academic and cultural hub with oak lined avenues, art galleries, museums, and heritage Cape Dutch architecture. Set against the towering Helderberg Mountains lies the quaint Franschhoek. Influenced by the French Huguenots who settled here more than 300 years ago, today it's the nation's gourmet capital, boasting award-winning restaurants, world-famous vineyards, and legendary hospitality.

The other wine routes are equally impressive, including Walker Bay in Hermanus and Constantia, whose wines were arguably patronized by Napolean during his imprisonment in St. Helena! Have lunch at one of the wayside bistros; or arrange to have a picnic made up for you to relish beside a quiet stream.

There are multiple golf courses in the Winelands region including Erinvale, Pearl Valley, Steenberg, De Zalze and Stellenbosch, with several hosting premier international tournaments and also having their own onsite wineries. Some of the country's most famous golfers such as Ernie Els, Retief Goosen, Louis Oosthuizen and David Frost produce their own vintages in private estates of the region, making them the perfect holiday souvenirs.
